Dried Honeycrisp Apples

My family loves dried fruit, so I decided to start making our fruit myself and it tastes so good. We go through several apples a week. This is a really simple recipe that you can also make using an oven if you don’t have a food dehydrator. You will need the following ingredients:

Recipe:

3 honey crisp apples

1 bowl of water

fruit fresh or lemon juice

Prepare the apples by washing and peeling them. Tip: You can leave the peeling on if you enjoy the peelings.

Slice the apples to about 1/8 inch of thickness.

In a small bowl add about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water and about 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon of fruit fresh or lemon juice. You could also add vinegar if you wish too. This step is used to keep the apples from turning brown. If you do not care if the apples turn brown then just skip this step.

Lay the apples on a wire mesh rack and place them into the dehydrator. Turn the temperature to 140 degree F and set the time for 5- 6 hours.

The apples are done when the are dried and bendable. After the apples have cooled to room temperature place the apples into a airtight container and shake them everyday for about 10 days to check the moisture content of the apples.

Note: You can also dry apples in your oven just set the oven to its lowest temperature and place the apples on a mesh rack and cook them until they are dry.

I remember my family making staked apple cakes out of dried apples. Some of my family have even dried their apples in the back of car windows many years ago.
