Authentic Restaurant-Style Refried Beans

After trying several different ways to make refried beans like the Mexican restaurants serve around here, I finally came up with a recipe that my family loves. It is so easy and simple to make. I use pinto beans that I can every year, but you can use store bought or fresh for this recipe. You will need the following ingredients:

Recipe:

2 cups of cooked pinto beans (fresh or canned will work)

2 tablespoons of diced onions

1/4 – 1/2 cup warm water

1 clove of garlic, minced finely

1/8 teaspoon of chili powder

1/4 teaspoon of cumin

salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon of neutral oil

Preheat a skillet on medium heat. Add the oil and onions and cook for about 3 minutes. Next add the chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper and garlic and cook for about 1 minute. Pour the beans into the skillet and mash with a potato masher. The back of a spoon works well too.

Cook for about 5 minutes. You may have to add water to the beans to get them to the consistency that you like. Enjoy!

Note: I tried using butter in this recipe but I found that the taste was off so I tried using a neutral oil and it was so much better.

My family enjoys these beans served on the side of tacos, burritos, tostadas and many other Mexican dishes that I make. Adding cheese to the top of the refried beans is certainly a family favorite.
