Granny’s Pear Butter Canning Recipe

After buying some pears at a big box store and not eating them before they were going to go bad, I decided to make an old family recipe. Pear butter was a recipe my granny made almost every year. She served it for breakfast in the mornings with her warm buttermilk biscuits or with some buttered toast. I asked my family about making pear butter and they asked me “What’s that?” So, I told them to just sit back and wait and I would make some and they could see what pear butter was. You will need the following ingredients for this recipe:

Recipe: It makes 1 1/2 pints.

6 large ripe pears

1/2 lemon, juiced and zested

1/4 cup of water

2 cups of sugar

First start by peeling, seeding and slicing your pears. Place them in a saucepan and add lemon zest, lemon juice, sugar and water and bring to a slow boil on the stove. Stir this often as you do not want to scorch it.

You can also use your oven on 250 degrees or your crockpot just stir the mixture often.

Cook until it reaches the consistency you want. It should coat the spoon when it reaches pear butter. This takes up to 2 – 3 hours on the stove top or up to 4 – 8 hours in the oven and crock pot. Enjoy!

You may store the leftovers in the fridge for up to 1 – 3 months.

Note: This recipe can be water bathed and canned if you wish. You need to water bath for 10 minutes. It will make 3 jelly jars. You can double the recipe if you like.

This was an instant favorite. I could not believe my family had not ever had pear butter but now it will be something that I make often.
