Pie Crust

I am not a fan of the store-bought pie crusts. Whether they are frozen or refrigerated they just don’t taste as good as the homemade ones and to be honest I can make a homemade one in about 10 minutes or less. You will need the following ingredients:

Recipe:

1 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar

1/8 teaspoon of salt

6 tablespoons of cold butter

2 tablespoons of cold shortening

1/8 – 1/4 cup of water with ice cubes in it

In a medium bowl mix together the flour, sugar, and salt.

Add the butter that has been grated with a box grater or cut into very small pieces and the shortening and mix together until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of the ice water and mix this mixture together until it forms a ball. You may have to add a little more water if it is too dry to form a ball.

Try to do this as quickly as possible because you do not want the butter or shortening to start to melt. Don’t over mix this as this will make for a tough pie crust.

When the dough ball is formed press down into a flat shape and wrap in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

Roll out this crust to the desired shape and size and bake according to the recipe that you are using. Enjoy!

Note: This pie crust is for those sweet treats that we all like to make. This is not the recipe to use for a savory recipe as the sugar that is added would make it sweet.

Also, you can double or triple this recipe and make them up ahead of time and store in the freezer. When you get to the plastic wrap part just place the wrapped pie crusts into a freezer bag and freeze them. Just take them out a few hours before you need them and let them thaw in the refrigerator.
