Chinese Sweet and Sour Pork

Chinese food is one of mine and my daughter’s favorite foods to eat. So, I came up with this recipe as sweet and sour pork was one of our favorite’s. If you don’t wish to make the sweet and sour sauce homemade you could just purchase your favorite from the store and eliminate a lot of the ingredients, but the sauce is truly worth the 5 minutes it takes to put together. You will need the following ingredients:

Recipe:

For the Pork

1 to 1 1/2 pounds of pork loin

1/4 cup of cornstarch

1/2 cup of flour

2 tablespoons of oil

salt and pepper to taste

For the Sauce

12 oz of orange juice or 2 small cans of pineapple juice

1 clove of garlic, grated

1 teaspoon of fresh ginger, peeled and grated

1/2 cup of water

1/2 cup of brown sugar

1/4 cup of soy sauce

1/2 cup of rice wine vinegar

1/4 cup of ketchup

2 teaspoons of cornstarch

Vegetables

1 can of water chestnuts, drained

1 bell pepper

1 large onion

2 green onions sliced thinly for garnish

Rice, Cooked to the package directions.

In a small saucepan add the orange or pineapple juice, garlic, ginger, brown sugar, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, ketchup, and water to a boil for 5 minutes and then take the 2 teaspoons of cornstarch and add it to a small bowl and spoon 4 teaspoons or so of the hot liquid very carefully into a the bowl and stir together mixing well. Pour this cornstarch mixture into the sweet and sour sauce and cook until thickened. It should only take a minute or so. Turn down to low.

Preheat a large skillet to medium heat.

Slice the pork loins very thinly and add salt and pepper. In a medium bowl add the flour and cornstarch together and mix well. Take the pork and coat it evenly in this mixture. Add the oil to the skillet and then cook the pork until it is golden brown on both sides.

Should take 5 – 7 minutes. Stir this pork often so it doesn’t burn.

Cut up the onions and bell peppers and add them along with the drained water chestnuts to the skillet with the pork and cook until the vegetables are done to your liking.

Add the sweet and sour sauce to this and mix together. Enjoy!

Note: You can use any vegetable you enjoy.
